PE Vision

At Blessed Dominic Catholic Primary School, we have PE lessons to ensure our pupils can achieve their full potential by leading physically active and full lives. We want every child to understand the importance of physical health, and the impact it can have on their academic learning, their emotional literacy and their social development.

We aim to offer a wide range of activities and opportunities in order to develop our pupils’ resilience, motivation, self-discipline and self-confidence. Pupils will have the chance to take part in both competitive and non-competitive sporting events, within the school or our local borough. Pupils will study different sports and skills, learning to work collaboratively and independently, developing their communication skills and their understanding of themselves. Pupils will be challenged and taught how to challenge themselves.

EYFS

Pupils in EYFS engage in the physical world through a wide range of activities designed to help develop their gross and fine motor skills. Pupils will have daily opportunities to be physically active in a variety of ways, from developing their spatial awareness and balance by moving at different speeds in the playground or using bikes, to manipulating a range of objects comfortably, by painting in the classroom or using simple tools to change malleable material. They will also begin to be exposed to games and start to understand how to communicate effectively with a team. Continuous provision ensures physical development is always happening in EYFS.

KS1

Pupils will follow a sequence of lessons in PE improving their movement skills including running, jumping, throwing and catching, balance, agility and co-ordination. These skills are applied in a range of situations, individually or as part of a group or team, in topics such as dance, gymnastics, ball sports and athletics. Pupils will begin to develop their understanding of team games, learning simple tactics and how to apply them in different games, as well as how to communicate to teammates.

KS2

Pupils continue to follow a sequence of lessons revisiting topics covered in KS1 as well as new topics in order to build on the skills they developed and continue to develop them further. The pupils will take part in competitive team games, communicating as a team and developing their resilience and ability to work collaboratively. They will also link more of their learning to PSHE and their understanding of how to approach challenges and motivate themselves. They have the opportunity to enter competitive and non-competitive events representing their school and participate in individual and team competitions.

Memorable experiences and whole school events

Our PE curriculum is delivered both by class teachers and PE specialists. PE lessons are designed to be engaging and give children the opportunity to develop their skills and use them when taking part in various competitions both inter and intra-level.

Cross Curricular

PE learning links closely with the PSHE curriculum and pupils will have the opportunity to take part in cross-curricular workshops. Teachers are also encouraged to make links to topics in other subjects that link to physical education, such as in Science, Maths, History and DT.

Trips and extra curricular opportunities

The children take part in enrichment days which are physical-activity focused, a variety of borough competitions and events, as well as inter-school netball and football leagues.

Planning

Our PE Curriculum is high quality, well-thought-out and is planned to demonstrate progression. If children keep up with the curriculum, they are deemed to be making good or better progress. Planning is designed to allow children to develop skills and routinely revisit and build upon these skills to develop their ability to use these skills confidently in familiar and unfamiliar contexts.

Assessment

Assessments will take the form of end of unit games, performances or routines and ongoing teacher assessments throughout the unit.  The subject leader will be updated half termly of standards in the subject across all year groups.

Challenge

All pupils, especially those with sound understanding, will be challenged and given the opportunity to deepen and broaden their learning. Teachers will give pupils the opportunity to apply their skills in lessons independently.

At Blessed Dominic Catholic Primary School, we measure the impact of our curriculum through the following methods:

Pupil Voice

Pupils will show through pupil conferencing, school sports council feedback and extra-curricular/competition engagement, their understanding and enjoyment of PE.

Evidence 

Teacher assessment and pupil voice, as well as performance in events and competitions will evidence pupils’ development of skills, in addition to class books on their learning linked to key vocabulary from specific topics.

Outcomes

Outcomes of work will reflect those planned. The National Curriculum objectives will be met. Outcomes will reflect the age and ability of pupils. Pupils will have access to a broad range of activities and outcomes will reflect the well planned and delivered curriculum.
